Gold question A:
The first legislation in Sweden regarding holiday rights was introduced in 1938. According to this law, all employees were entitled to two weeks of holiday. In 1951, the holiday entitlement was extended to three weeks, and at the same time, these ten small cottages were built, originally with self-catering and a kitchen. It is said that several local politicians at the time were worried about what the workers would do with their extra holiday week and whether alcohol abuse would follow. To rent one of the small houses, worker families had to submit a written application explaining the reason. The rental was income-tested, and anyone earning below a certain income could apply.
